buy a home with a pool or install a pool in their backyard thinking that it
will be used all the time. And while that may prove perfectly true for some,
for others, the pool turns into little more than a high-cost landscaping
choice. If you have a pool in your backyard that is unused, unkempt, or simply
no longer functional, you might be wondering what your options are. Keep

Removing Your Pool
Obviously,
the first step to making new use of that space is to remove your pool. There

the pool and fill it with dirt. However, this doesn't give you a lot of options
for reusing the space, as it leaves the pool walls and surrounding decking
intact. The second option is to remove the decking and upper portion of pool
walls, then fill in the remaining hole with dirt. The final option involves
removing all parts of the pool and surrounding decking, then refilling your
backyard and leveling it.
Using the Space for Landscaping
As
mentioned above, simply filling your pool with dirt doesn't allow you to do
much with landscaping, as you have concrete decking and buried pool walls.
However, if you remove the decking and the upper 1.5 to 2 feet of walls, you
can actually re-landscape your yard without worrying about what's left of the
pool. Those 2 feet of dirt over the pool's remaining walls are ample space for you to plant a garden, put in new grass, or even install a sprinkler system.
Building on the Space
If,
however, you want to build a new structure over where the pool used to be, or
you want to put an addition onto your house that will extend into the former
pool area, you will want to have the pool entirely removed. When building a structure,
a new foundation will have to be poured, and existing pool walls can get in the
way of this and possibly cause structural issues.
